About Fynbos and Fire by Dirk Theron

Dirk Theron

I had the opportunity

after the recent fires in the mountains behind Kleinmond, to explore the area and photograph the remnants.

The protea is our national flower. This beautiful flower, that symbolizes courage and diversity, burnt black and brown so that now, we drive past a burnt-out protea bush without even glancing at it or giving it a second thought. I created this series called Fynbos and Fire, to show a different beauty in the Protea, beauty in its destruction, and to pay homage to this majestic creation and the surrounding Fynbos.

The beauty of fynbos is known across the world and is typified by the Protea, which symbolizes Courage and Diversity. Fynbos and Fire make strange bedfellows; but the connection is important for the continuation of many fynbos species. The relationship between fynbos and fire creates its own beauty which has been captured in this series of prints.

I have chosen Brushed Aluminium as the primary medium to print on. This is a more expensive printing medium, but because it's Dibond, it will outlive just about any other medium and it works in most lighting conditions.
